Yes, we get emotional obstacles all the time but to be an emotional ball all the time is just ridiculously self-indulgent"

Shucks

Powered by ScribeFire.

Rey returns and gets hung out to dry by Chavo

Rey returns and gets hung out to dry by Chavo, originally uploaded by AlvinLHC.

The Great Khali! All the way from the death of Thaddeus Cheong to the Benoit family tragedy, it has been a trying week. Looking to God seems more vital than ever in these circumstances.

It is now difficult to look at Chris Benoit the same way anymore, which is sad because professionally, this guy put together the most consistent set of strong American style matches ever. Obviously, he had problems with handling family and all, with Daniel having Fragile X syndrome didn't help.. This doesn't excuse the action but I think we are looking for some explanations and perhaps this does provide a few answers. Now he will be remembered for these heinous acts rather than as a standout sports entertainer.I guess teh outrage is justified given the transgression and the world doesn't forgive easily. Perhaps it is only the ones who really followed his career closely that will appreciate the Wolverine's body of work now. Even then, there will always be a blood-stained tinge on his whole career now. No HOF WWE or Observer style, nor any good memories. Sigh. That's not sadder than Daniel and Nancy and Chris being killed but personally I cant help but feel a tinge of regret over a lost legacy as well.

Powered by ScribeFire.

Letter about Chris Benoit to TODAY reporter Lee U Wen

Hello

I am a 26 year old wrestling fan who has been watching WWE and other
wrestling organisations for over 20 years and have been following the backstage
manoeuvrings of the industry closely for the last 10 years or so with the advent
of the Internet. I have been to 2 WWE UK PPVs (Insurrexion 2000/1) in London and
1 UK House Show in Manchester. I also caught the WWE when it last came to town
in 2003. I do follow the thrice weekly broadcasts and monthly PPVs and tune
in even to rival TNA's Impact pretty regularly. In addition, I have a mighty
fine collection of DVDs, enjoying especially the history-based DVDs that the E
puts out occasionally. Basically I am a smart fan who appreciates it from both a
fan and insider level. In spite of going through the deaths of countless current
stars (Brian Pillman in 1997, Owen Hart in 1999, Eddie Guerrero in 2005), this
one still floors me more than those because of the circumstances and the
potential shakeout from it.

First, I would have to say that as a performer, I completely respect Chris
Benoit. From his early days in Stampede Wrestling and Japan and later through
WCW and finally the WWE, I always considered him one of the best technical
wrestlers of all time (although the best overall package would probably be Ric
Flair or Shawn Michaels, Chris wasn't much of a talker and entertainer as you
noted), and one who could brawl and get a good match out of virtually anyone he
worked with, even the proverbial broom stick). I had the privilege of watching
him live twice against Brock Lesnar in Singapore and against Kurt Angle in the
UK. To me in the ring, there were few better. He idolised the Dynamite Kid and
patterned his hard-hitting style after the former British Bulldog. In turn, up
and comers, as you noted in your piece in TODAY, idolised Benoit as well, hoping
to learn from and train under him. Even the next generation of Hart family
members like Harry Smith and Nattie Neidhart were training under Chris, awaiting
their time in the spotlight.

The problem now with the evidence that has come to light, is that Chris'
legacy may be sullied and destroyed altogether. The WWE has started to eliminate
all traces of association with him from their website and programming, only
following the unravelling of the story as more facts come to light. This is NOT
an Eddie or Owen situation but something entirely different that has virtually
never happened in the world of pro-wrestling. Instead of a wrestling genius and
all-around good human being, Benoit will be remembered by many casual fans and
the public as the pro-wrestler who murdered his family and killed himself. In
fact, Vince McMahon sort of apologised for the Benoit tribute on ECW Tuesday
night (US time) once the facts got out and the public called up the USA TV
network to complain. It is the same public pressure that will almost ensure that
Benoit may never be mentioned again by the WWE in the near or foreseeable future.
Sad as it may seem, this is only reasonable given the potential for a backlash
from the general public. An induction into the WWE Hall of Fame would be
questionable and doubtful at this point for the same reasons. In fact, the Chris
Benoit tribute has been pulled from international distribution altogether once
facts emerged that Benoit was the murderer. Supersports will NOT be screening
that episode on July 4. The hardcore fans will remember the Benoit from the
great matches but I guess we may the only one who do so. Such is life.

Also, with the seemingly high profile nature of this case, the industry may
come under scrutiny for its widespread use of steroids. "Roid rage" was cited as
a possible cause of the double homicide/suicide and who knows if Washington
would see it worth its while to investigate the industry and the many
drug-related deaths that have occurred in recent years, with many workers like
Bam Bam Bigelow, Curt Hennig, Mike Awesome and Davey Boy Smith not living pass
the age of 45. The strange thing is that the most often cited Roid Rage victim,
Scott Steiner, is still alive and well and competing in TNA. The industry and
Vince McMahon could be forced to do things like give the talent much needed time
off or conduct stricter drug checks to cut down drug abuse, which could possibly
help alleviate the situation as it stands. We are at a point that the industry
might have to change in response to the Benoit situation and perhaps this is the
only good that could come out of this situation.

Thank you once again for your nice little tribute to Benoit in the paper
today. Really hope to hear from you on this situation and your interest in the
strange but interesting world of pro-wrestling. (I don't have much time for MMA
at this point in my career)

Thanks again

Alvin Lim

Powered by ScribeFire.

Thaddeus Cheong Wing Kit (1990-2007), Chris Benoit (1967-2007)

Never knew them personally but still its sad. Very relaxing and felt good after 20 laps. Haven't done that in a while. Life during term time is seriously nuts but having time to stand back and take stock does help a little. Wish could have more of this .

Those who know know that I have suffered some loss and some gain in the past 2 weeks. Its been an emotional rollercoaster but I have seen how faith in God has really helped my family and I get through difficult times.

Rest in peace, Ah Ma, memories of you and the wonderful care , food and wrestling-viewing which you gave to us will be with me always. Your love shown in proxy through your children has forever taught me that the love of a family is paramount.

On the other hand, 6B has been particularly successful at their respective finals. Time does zoom by, not respecting man nor regime nor belief. Spent the new year at Smash again with some floor-shaking (literally) worship. It was great. Let's hope the same fervour is put into every aspect of life and young people, go shake the world for Jesus! Nothing compares to ushering in the new year with Him,forthe purpose and love and completeness He provides outclasses any other source of jubilation and hoy.

Pastor Dan called this the year of completion as the new building is set for completion (Hallelujah!) and the church is growing healthily! Excellent. Let's hope I will be able to bring a close to the projects I have on my plate as well

It's going to be another tough year, but the challenge is to be relished and I pray and hope I am up to the challenge, in all senses of the word. Although it can sound formulaic at times, this year's offering from United can be regarded as one of their best yet. This album kicks off with the three part rocking medley of "The Time Has Come", "Take It All" and "From God Above". After you catch your breath, there are powerful declarations like "From The Inside Out" and "The Stand" and the beautiful "None But Jesus". I have been rather critical of Hillsong stuff for the past few years, but their youth wing has hardly disappointed, remaining very relevant and somewhat fresh ( These two can conflict with each other sometimes in the realm of worship). This recording gives hope to Hillsong fans for when Darlene Zschech co. decide to hand over the reigns to this talented group, they will be more than ready to fill those large shoes.

powered by performancing firefox

Flying Into Daybreak - Charlie Hall

The Passion movement's resident botak and contender for the largest goatee in the world, as opposed to David Crowder's strangest, released this album in January this year and it is evident he has gone from strength to strength in writing powerful lyrics and moving choruses. But the ugliness of that situation does not diminish what is a stirring and engaging worship album from Ross Parsley and the Desperation crew. Largely comprised of new songs (apart from 'Praises', 'Promises' and 'Your Name'), this Hillsong-like album is very listenable and enjoyable. Epics like 'Here In Your Presence' work well to create an atmosphere conducive for devotion and the trifecta punch of 'Glorious God' (complete with DJ scratching), 'Live to Worship' and 'This Is Our God' end the set of on a high note. Hillsong-lovers will love this addition to the worship pantheon.

powered by performancing firefox

Living For You - Gateway Church

Another sleeper album of the year. In my humble opinion, way better than the annual Hillsong album, because of the freshness it brings to the table. People, don't just buy or download Hillsongs, listen to these guys as well. Mostly graduates from Christ For The Nations Institute (CFNI) in Dallas, Texas, this album is really a tour de force. I was drawn in by the title track at first then went on to rediscover CFNI tracks like "You, You Are God", "Overtaken", the excellent "Revelation Song" (soon to be classic) and "When I Seek You". New tracks like "Bound" and "Pure" are catchy, relevant and fresh. Hillsong and gang better watch out, this album is heads and shoulders better than their Oz worship anytime. This is one of the most consistent albums you will find all year.

powered by performancing firefox

A Greater Song - Paul Baloche

When a veteran worship leader decides to pair up with other songwriters in order to freshen up his repertoire and style, you get a great album. From top to bottom, this is one of the best, most congregation-friendly albums this year. Teaming up with writers like Brenton Brown and Matt Redman, Baloche has re-invented himself for the modern worship crowd. From the opening "Hosanna" to the upbeat "I Will Boast", the declarative "What Can I Do" and the finale "Rising", you will like this completely accessible little album from one of the Christian world's best songwriters. Although not as knockout as 2004's "Arriving", which featured its fair share of classic songs and worship anthems, this one doesnt fair too badly, especially considering that it has garnered 2 Grammy nominations in the Best Gospel (Pop/Rock) categories. I read that someone complained that this album is "too Tomlin", whatever that means, but I love it. From upbeat numbers like "Awesome Is The Lord Most High" to the meditative "Uncreated One" and anthemic "Made to Worship", this album will be keenly embraced by worshippers looking to add to their worshop repertoire. Tomlin might not be particularly innovative (like stablemates Charlie Hall and Dave Crowder) music-wise, but he brings a sincerity and earnestness to his writing and (much undervalued) singing that allows him to hold his own among the fellows at Sixsteps Records. Its just good worship music and very Biblical too! I add about 3 to my collection legitimately a week and these range from the secular (and occasionall, the profane) to the spriritual. Just going to blog about some of my favourite Christian music projects from this year.

Leeland- Sound of Melodies

One of the most exciting projects of the year, not because it is SO brilliant (although its Keane-ish sound is really qute sweet and Leeland Mooring's voice has the nice blend of calmness and emotion), but because Mooring himself, the lead singer and writer, is so young at 18. He was also asked to write for Michael W. Smith for Smith's own album "Stand", also released this year. Standout tracks for me include "Tears of the Saints" and "Carried to the Table". You won't really be singing these songs in a corporate settng but for quiet times of devotion, these are really quite suitable. Look for Leeland and his band in the years to come.

powered by performancing firefox

On the cusp of another year

Ah, Its good to be at the end of another 12 months of hectic work. Watched the film today at Cine with a pretty packed house. 1st screening at 3pm. The hall was filled with laughter as Borat's buffoonery filled the screen. The man takes a dump in front of Trump Towers, wreaks havoc in an antique shop, shows inappropriate photographs to his etiquette coach and wrestles his "director" into various positions in his hotel room. It really is a classic piece of satire but on some levels, it is mean and demeaning to the unsuspecting Americans who happen to be his subjects in a twisted social expose.

Borat really makes you question where the lines of good taste and decency should be drawn, even in the name of satire. That said, my favourite gag was when Borat sounds the horn on his ice-cream truck and a group of small children eagerly scamper towards his vehicle, presumedly to buy some frozen treats, only to find Borat's pet bear (!) growling at them. Needless to say, the children get out of there screaming in terror. I laughed till it hurt.

Its a worthwhile film to invest 85 minutes of your life in but if you are easily offended (even Pentecostals aren't spared) then give it a miss.

Newborn!

She is here!

Here are some pictures of the old:

Kind of sad to see ol' Mitsu go, but she has been replaced by something red-hot and dare I say it, sexier!

It handles quite well so far, a little more weight and struggle to go up the bridge and the bass ain't as strong as the XPlod, but whatever, its a new car and I went for the style over the substance knowingly anyway. They burst onto the scene sometime in 1997/98 with a stonking single called 'Never Ever' and followed that up with pretty good songs such as 'Lady Marmalade', 'Under The Bridge' (both covers, I know, but done in an inoffensive way) and in 2000, 'Pure Shores', the theme song to that DiCaprio vehicle, 'The Beach'. Then they made a terrible film, which I remember watching on opening day at The Odeon in Leeds. Nic and Nat Appleton soon partied harder than they sang while Shaznay went to star in 'Bend It Like Beckham'. Muscially, they could never match the giddy heights they acheived as the All Saints so in 2006, the once-bitter enemies are now pals again and have a new single (Rock Steady) and album (Studio 1) out very soon. It already sounds like a winner to me already. So kids, get ready for the All Saints once again. They are pretty good. Ahh the draw of a few pounds. For all the wrong reasons, this boy is still in competition for the crown of Singapore Idol 2. As Dick Lee says, “The singing sucks”. In a nutshell, that is what is wrong with our dear Mr. Joakim Gomez. An inability to carry a tune is a severe impediment to one’s singing career (Geri Halliwell and Paris Hilton might object to that last comment though). Joakim should not have such a career. Go model, act, host, whatever. Just don’t go anywhere near a recording studio and assault out ears once again. This man has the ability to single-handedly destroy what’s left of Singapore’s English pop scent. Imagine him singing at NDP 2007, people! He would bring us international shame. Other countries vote in people like Kelly Clarkson, Guy Sebastian and Will Young, all talents in their own right while we could get a talentless and clueless 18 year old who butchers every song he attempts! Stop and think about your actions, Joakim fans. International pride is at stake! We cannot afford a travesty like that to happen!

Anyway, album of the week goes to Christian Aguilera’s Back to Basics. A decent double album with hints of old school jazz thrown in. Nifty.

Special mention also to 3 new male troubadours : Paolo Nutini (These Streets) , Ray LaMontagne (Trouble) and James Morrison (Undiscovered). The former two are Ryan Adams-ish while the last one is the new James Blunt or the male Joss Stone (as UK Launch put it). Good stuff to chill to.

Interesting weekend

What a weekend! Started off well with a nice bout of library duty in school on Friday. Nice and peaceful and I managed to get some marking done. We doubt, we disagree, we refuse to believe. Perhaps,we have seen cases where things did not turn out the way we wanted.

She didnt get healed
They didnt get the provision they needed
Troubling times remain

The psalmists went through these and more and they still clung onto God for sustinence. The difference? They were desperate enough the believe. Here, we banter, debate, ask and doubt. I wouldnt know why that didnt happen or God didnt seem to come through there. Its a fallen world. Does this negate my God? Only if you allow it to. Its not iron-clad scientific law. Things happen and we do not know the circumstances under which they did. When you are safe and fed, you have time to doubt. When your life is at stake, you cling on harder.

I still believe God's promises of provision, wellness, identity and purpose are there for me and I choose to claim them for my own. Started with water polo finals in the morning where I witnessed one of the best shows of Rafflesian Spirit in a long while. The guys fought all the way and never said die although they were trailing. Although they lost to HCI 5-4, they reminded me of why I have been so proud to be a Rafflesian ever since I was 13. That imdomitable, can-do spirit that fights till the end was personified by Kory, Chen Kai, Pengfei et al. and they should be real proud of themselves. Cheers guys and may you bring back the gold next year!

Just watched MM Lee adress a group of journos and undergrads on the tele today. You may not agree with his politics totally but today, I was absolutely sold on his vision for Singapore. The man is nearing 83 and his intellect and memory are as sharp as ever. Not everyone will say he is a saint but here is a person who is absolutely sure of what he wants for Singapore, keeps abreast of what happens among the younger generation and is unafraid to pursue what he feels is the best vision for Singapore, even if it flies in the face of conventional liberal Western democratic ideal. I may be cyncial and skeptical at times of politics in Singapore but I was thoroughly impressed by LKY tonight. Brimming with exuberance, unique imagery and a quirky take on a life of faith, A Collision starts with a take on the old Loretta Lynn song "Everyone wants to Go To Heaven", which segues into the beautiful "Come and Listen", the most plaintive song since "All That I Can Say". Highlights of this album includes Forever and Ever Etc, Wholly Yours. Do Not Move, A Beautiful Collision, etc. Open your minds to what is possible in the realm of Christian music and the DC*B won't disappoint.

two

Passion 2005: How Great Is Our God

This CD/DVD combo delivers the usual live rendition of favourites from the SixStep Records family. This year, Matt Redman, Charlie Hall, David Crowder, Chris Tomlin and Watermark's Christy Nockels are joined by acoustic duo Shane and Shane on this live recording from Memphis, TN in January 2005.

Previous studio efforts that seem a bit staid become alive in the live worship setting. These include tracks like Crowder's No One Like You and Tomlin's How Great Is Our God and Indescribable. Charlie Hall's Marvellous Light combines unusal imagery with a worshipful lyric while the whole project closes with the pensive, wonderous version of popular hymn It Is Well, which seems to lift the worship experience to whole other level with its raw hunger from a generation desperate for His renown

3

Jeff Feyo's "Surrender"

An album I thoroughly enjoyed from the heart and soul of SonicFLOOD, Jeff Deyo. Culling songs from his 2 solo efforts, Saturate and Light, plus throwing in some re-done recent faves ( a la the original SF used to do so well), this set, recorded in New Zealand at the Parachute Festival in January 2005, is a good showcase of how Deyo's songs and worship-leading are able to blend together to produce an atmosphere of worship. This is despite these songs not being the most congregation-friendly.

Highlights include the storming opener "Lose Yourself" and the most beautiful live rendition of "Bless The Lord"

four

The best Hillsong United album yet. In fact, the youth wing of the Hillsong church has been producing the best album from that Antipodian worship factory for the past 2 years. They best the more main stream August release by having a more relevant, punchier and edgier presentation and style, while Darlene and co. seem contented to stay with the tried and true (which is what their older audience demands). Both albums are just as worshipful but the United releases really are the better for the above mentioned reasons.

Look To You opens with the triple punch of Salvation Is Here, Tell The World (love the bassline on these tracks) and the title track. It then segues into the beautiful All I Need Is You, that is worshipful and passionate. Other tracks like There Is Nothing Like and the chant-like Shout Unto God capture the worshipful spirit of this youth movement very well. Closing with Rich Mullins' Awesome God was a master touch , making the best closure for any Hillsong live project in a while.

5

Here are my 5 favourite Christian albums of 2005.

Shane and Shane have always been a favourite of mine. They first caught my attention with their extremely emotive and worshipful It Is Well on the Passion 05 soundtrack. With 4 smash studio albums under their belt, the soulful duo came out with this CD/DVD project containing the best of their output so far. From the pensive Yearn and I Miss You to the upbeat Arise, their whimsical acoustic guitar sound and tight harmonies underscore the simplicity and beauty of their work. Definitely an album worth buying for more sophisticated and mature listeners

christmas

It has been a right quiet and beauitiful Christmas. Kicked off with a series of great outreaches for the kids. All clusters did better this year. We (and myself) have a long way to go before effectively sharing the gospel but I think many effective seeds were sown. Hope to see some of those come to fruition.

Service as usual on 24th. Sensed that it needed a spiritual element so I did a 20 min mini-sermon segment that didnt go off too badly on "Light Of The World". Hopefully a good start of things to come. Indeed, Jesus is the light of this season. Let's never forget that.

Adjourned to the Kueks for christmas party. It was nice and quiet an affair that was rather casual and relaxed. Lots of fun crapping and sharing and playing of games and feasting on gorgeous food. Thanks to Gene for putting this one together. I am grateful for these friends that He has provided. Appreciate you all. This year was way better than last year.

Went for service at Lighthouse on Christmas Day. Nice sweet service with powerful sharing and vocals by Booby Michaels. Moved off for lunch at Yoshi (not associated with Mario) Restaurant for a Japanese buffet. Yummy stuff but slow due to staff not reporting to work (must be hung over). I do love my family although they annoy me no end at times these days. Haha. Thank God for all of them.

update

To everyone's surprise, an update.

Holidays have moved swimmingly slow at this point. It is truly a lovely place with snow-capped mountains, expansive glaciers, green meadows, roaring rivers, lakes and brooks, as well as majestic fjords.

The Maori call it "God's Own" in their own language and it truly deserves that title. Spent most of the 7 days sight-seeing, visiting towns such as Christchurch, Queenstown, Fox Glacier, Hokitika and numerous places along the scenic West Coast. Did you know that you can fly to the South Pole from CHC (Christchurch, not that other place)? We saw seals and penguins at this eden like place called Milford Sound. It was well worth the 5 hr ride there and 5 hr ride back.

We also did white water rafting and jet boating at Queenstown while the chaps went bungee jumping. With no inclination to jump off a bridge nor spend 140 SGD doing it, I sat that one out. Looked fun though. LOL.
